Friday Weigh In – 319.2 lb.

Last Friday: 319.7 lb.
This Friday: 319.2 lb.
Difference: Down 0.5 lb.
Withings Scale: Click Here

Well, I guess losing 1/2 a pound is better than gaining!  I got some good exercise in this week but didn’t do too good of a job of staying below my daily 2000 calorie limit.  I’m going to challenge myself next week and walk to work on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (as long as it doesn’t rain).  The temperature is cool enough to keep the funk down to an acceptable level.  We’ll see how it goes!

Man!  I knew I shouldn’t have cheated so much this past week!  I enjoyed life way too much since the last weigh in.  Thankfully, I was able to bounce back and break even for the weigh in this morning.  This was the eighth and final weigh in for the office Biggest Loser contest.  Here is the final scores for total weight lost:

1st Place – Duke (8.05%)
2nd Place – Ted (4.97%)

Hats off to Duke for showing everyone how it’s done.  For those who may be wondering, Duke’s secret is the infamous Atkins Diet and exercising twice a week.  Good job Duke!

I barely squeaked out another win!  That’s 90 bucks that I’ve won so far.  Not too bad for a fatboy!

Today also marks my 10th day without drinking booze of any kind and so far so good.  I only had one craving for beer this week and it only lasted for about an hour before I was able to will it away.  Judging by the numbers that I posted for this week I guess it’s safe to conclude that beer was definately the number one contributing factor to my stunted progression.  I exercised every day for 30 minutes and only cheated my 2000 calories/day goal on Tuesday (that’s that small spike you can see this week).

Five pounds is probably twice as fast as I should be losing by a dietitian’s standards but frankly I’m not too worried about it.  I’m eating food that I like and I have yet to feel starved or miserable.    The calorie breakdown of my meals is typically 15% Breakfast / 35% Lunch /50% Dinner which is probably the opposite that most dietitians would recommend.  For me I like saving 1/2 of my daily calories for dinner which I typically eat around 5-6pm.  Doing so keeps me nice and content for the rest of the evening.

We’re down to the last week of the Biggest Loser contest at work!   The only way I’m going to catch up with Duke is if he gains and I loose as much as I did this week.  Too bad I don’t have what it takes to cut weight in the sauna like a MMA fighter. They unfortunately don’t sell XXXXL trash bag suits down at Mr. Freaky Big’s Big and Tall Store.

Freakybig’s Log – June 17th 2009

Mood: Frustrated

I feel like one of the guards from the original Tenchu Stealth Assassin. If you threw them a ball of rice they would immediately pick it off the ground and start eating eat. That’s the sort of willpower (or lack thereof) I displayed last night.

I don’t know why I let myself so easily get tripped up when I’m doing so good. It’s not like I had a hard day at the office. I didn’t need to drown my sorrows or eat away my frustration. I was a bit frustrated that my AC was not working as well as it should but it’s not like it wasn’t working at all. No, I simply had a pathetic moment of weakness where I let myself enjoy a 6 pack of beer (it was light beer) which led to a another 6 pack of beer (12 light beers is not so light) which led to not one but TWO frakkin’ frozen pizzas.

I just find myself devoid of any sense of moderation when I drink which sadly isn’t exactly new news to me. My friends know me as a beer lover but frankly that’s a reputation that is going to prevent me from achieving my goals of a healthier me.  I have to simply cut out the booze or at the very least restrict it to my one cheat day a week.

Confucius had it right. “A man who has committed a mistake and doesn’t correct it, is committing another mistake.”

The No S Diet

  • No Snacks
  • No Sweets
  • No Seconds
  • (Except on Days that Start with S)

The concept is so simple that I feel stupid for having not thought about it myself.  Eat three meals a day consisting of just one plate of food per meal.  No desserts.  No in between meal snacks.  When the weekend rolls around you get to reward your deligence and moderation.

Sticking to three meals is the sort of mental training someone like myself needs to keep myself on track without bogging down in calorie counting or succumbing to the desperation of abstaining from the things I like.  It’s really just going back to eating behaviors of pre-1970s America before snacking became so mainstream and to a time when our obesity rate wasn’t through the roof.  It’s the sort of eating behavior found in France and China where the obesity rate pales in comparison to our own.

I stumbled onto this simple diet by way of Reinhard’s Shovelgloving website.  The guy is not a nutritionist or health expert.  He’s just a guy who stumbled onto a way to discipline himself by addressing the major factors of weight gain.  I went ahead and picked up his book but really it’s not neccessary for anyone to start this diet.  The book merely goes into the background for these rules (our snacking society, the rise of sugar consumption, etc) as well as answer some questions that some folks may have.  Can I put sugar in my coffee?  Is fruit juice okay to drink?  The book addresses these questions for folks who need extra guidance.

I highly recommend listening to a couple podcasts Reinhard put together over on his website.   Episodes 2 and 3 cover the No S Diet and are really all you need to know to built better eating habits and loose weight.

I’m sure some of my friends will see this as another failed New Years resolution by yours truely.  I’ll be the first to admit that such an assessment is fair if one was to look at my track record of dieting.  I really do think that this time it will be different.  I’ve lost 9 pounds since Jan. 1st and I have yet to deny myself the foods that I love.  I can even drink beer on the weekends if I wanted but I’ve decided to obstain from my beloved elixir for now.

Memorial Park Main Trail Walk

Ha!  According to Fitnio, our walk on the main Memorial Park trail consisted of us dodging and weaving into traffic for fun and sport!  So I guess it isn’t the most accurate of accounts but it got the job done.  Hillary and Jereme joined me on today’s jaunt where we did the full 3.9 mile circle of the Memorial Park trail that circles the main center part of the park where the golf course is.  It was an enjoyable walk if not a bit (well, okay a lot) more crowded than yesterday’s walk. We averaged 4.1 mph which is no slouch.  I also burned an astonishing 1122 calories according ot my new favorite iphone app LiveStrong (sorry Fitnio but you’re now a close second).

I blaze my own trail! (well, sorta)

I decided to go on a little walk this morning and try out this new Fitnio app for my iPhone.  I’m pretty impressed by how well it mapped out the path I took.  I decided to avoid the crowds on the main path and instead walked south down the main path to Memorial Dr. and then cut back to a power line area along some bike trails / maintenance road.  I followed it for (what seemed like) quite a ways before I found a trail that cut back into the woods and back to the main jogging path.  The entire trip was only 1.7 miles which took me 31 minutes to complete.  According to Fitnio I only burned 115 calories so it wasn’t the most efficient use of my time (I can typically burn morn on a treadmill for the same amount of time), but I certainly had more fun this way :)
