The Joss Whedon Experence
I really want to go to the San Diego Comic-Con and geek out live and in person at all the awesome panels. One of these days I will but until then I have Youtube and all the news blogs out there to thank for sharing the nuggets of excellence SDCC has to offer.
As many are aware, at SDCC they announced that Joss Whedon will be directing the Avengers film for Marvel Studios. Of course, for those of us who drank the Joss Kool-aid, this news is nothing short of epic. For the rest of you, just check out this epic ensemble at Joss’ disposal and there is no denying the synergy of excellent that this film has going for it.

Space Cowboy!
This was such a great episode of Castle and not just because Nathan Fillion dusted off his old Browncoat uniform (although that was pretty sweet)! Castle is easily in my top 3 favorite shows on TV right now. I recently read that it’s in the “maybe” category for getting renewed which is crazy. The show gets more viewers than Heroes and almost as much as some of the big sitcoms. It’s quality stuff!

Great gobs of goo shit that’s a lot of packaging! Where the frak am I gonna put this epic display of Sci-Fi goodness!? I’ll admit it’s a thing of beauty but damn! Am I the only fan of the series who thinks this is a tad overboard? I guess I could throw out the display box and keep the CD cases and plastic cylon but that just seems like such a waste!.:) I already spent way too much for the blu-ray editions that I’d hate to throw away all that extra “value”. Hell, that’s probably why they went nuts with the display – to lessen the cognitive dissonance us tight wads might feel. Oh well, I guess I’ll havta drown my misery in some HIGH DEFINITION Battlestar Galactica action! Woot!

TV Land

I’ve come to the conclusion that I am a bigger television show fan than a fan of feature length films. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good movie. I have my favorites just like everyone else. I’ve just come to the realization that I tend to get more out of an ongoing story told in an episodic format than a story that wraps itself up in 90 minutes. In a television series they can take time to develop the characters. In fact, more often than in a film, television characters tend to be more developed because of the fact that they are a part of multiple plots or an ongoing story.
I had this little epiphany based on a few aspects of my current lot in life. On any given week I find myself watching 3 to 6 hour long shows (not to mention a handful of 30 min sitcoms/animated shorts). I’m no mere tv whore who watches anything with a commercial break. I tend to gravitate towards sci-fi fair or shows that star actors from former sci-fi shows such as Nathan Fillion in Castle (OMFG watch Castle it’s great!). Maybe my love for character driven tv shows comes from my love for role playing games. I’m a sucker for a complicated character be it Baltar and his stuggle for self preservation or Dean Winchester and his evolving role in the fate on mankind. Over the course of several seasons these characters have evolved, grown and learned. It’s the sort of development that you don’t get from a movie.
One of the reasons why I came to this conclusion about television was due to my realization that I’m more interested in buying tv shows on Blu-ray and DVD instead of movies. I’d rather share a great tv show with a friend than a favorite film. I watched the entire BSG series with Toby and had throughly enjoyed it. Now, I’m watching the series again with Sluder and it’s just as fun as before. Maybe it’s because I’m in the comfort of my own home and I have my big fucking television to enjoy my shows. Or maybe it’s because I’m often watching television shows with friends and I enjoy sharing the OH SHIT moments with them.
Naw. I’m most likely way off. It’s probably because TV is cheap, I don’t have to leave my living room and television requires only an hour of commitment. Movies and books can’t compete on that level. Plus, I’m a cheap bastard who probably has an attention deficit issue that I’m not aware of.
