This week was quite the roller coaster! I’m glad that I was able to end the week back down at 319 (which I originally hit a few days ago). I doubt it will be enough to win this week’s Biggest Loser at work but I’m still gonna call it a win.
This also ends my 6 month experiment with The BodyBugg. While using the Bodybugg I lost 37 pounds which is roughly an average of 6 pounds a month. There is no doubting the effectiveness of a device that gives you fairly accurate data of how many calories you burn but I personally don’t believe having this data collected everyday is necessary. With the BodyBugg I was able to get a great idea of how many calories I burn when I’m completely sedentary (roughly 2900) as well as on a normal workday (around 3200). I know that 30 minutes on the elliptical can net me around 600 calories and 30 minutes of walking around 400 calories. Having these numbers on hand while tracking a daily 2000 calorie intake is all I really need to keep within my goal of 2-3 pounds a week. I may come back to the BodyBugg in 50 or so pounds when I need to recalculate my numbers but for now I think I’m fine without it.
Of course, tracking calories is how I lost weight before the BodyBugg as well as with the device so it’s no surprise that I will continue to do so. Before the Bodybugg I used the Livestrong iPhone app and website which was an effective and very low cost tool (I think it was free when I got it and now it’s only 3 bucks). Livestrong’s strongest asset (aside from the price) is the Daily Plate food database that is tied to it. It’s weak points however are a clunky website and lack of additional features that i’m interested in.
This is why I’ve decided to give The Daily Burn a try. It caught my eye mainly due to the fact that it integrates with my Withings wifi scale. Add in a very polished website and slick looking iPhone app and I just couldn’t resist giving it a go. I giving their lite version a try (costs 6 bucks a month or 50 a year) so we’ll see how it goes after 30 days.

Damn. This week cost me 10 bucks for not loosing any weight. I blame the typical excuses. A lack of motivation amplified with stress caused me to eat more than my daily goal and to not really push myself when it came to exercising. According to the Bodybugg numbers I should have at least lost a pound so I’m guessing I’ll probably see it tomorrow when I weigh myself. Oh well. All I can do is carry on with renewed determination.

Friday Weigh In – 325
Weigh In: 325 lbs
Gain/Loss for the Week: Lost 1 pound
Total Loss: 75 lbs
This was not what I’d call a typical week for me. I was shocked when I stepped on the scale Sunday morning and lost 3.6 pounds overnight. My only guess was that my sodium intake was very low the previous couple of days which allowed me to shed some of the water that I typically carry around. That same day was my most intense workout day of the week and yet on Monday I gained a pound. I probably would have maintained that level had it not been for me cutting loose a bit when my good buddy Sluder who was in town visiting. On Wednesday we hooked up with Ruen for some Mexican food at Chewy’s that, even though was my only meal for the day, easily contained 2000mg of sodium with enough calories to equal what I burned for the day. That’s where you see the spike back up to 325 on Thursday and today.
I’m not too disappointed with this week since I’m fairly certain that it will drop back down tomorrow or Sunday. Next weekend is Christmas which I’m sure will be a challenge but all in all I’m not going to sweat it. I’ll get in some exercise here and there and make sure any moments of weakness are followed up with some healthy form of penitence!

Friday Weigh In – 326
Weigh In: 326 lbs
Gain/Loss for the Week: Lost 3 pounds
Total Loss: 74 lbs
December has started off pretty well. This week I took it fairly easy compared to months ago when I was hitting the gym with fierce intensity. Well, on Friday I hit the gym hard but that’s because I was purging the squishy emo out of my body. The rest of week consisted of some positive attitude with walking and playing EA Sports Active on my brand shiny new Wii. I actually started off by trying Julian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2010 but that workout game was frakkin’ awful. I bought the game because I thought it’d be Julian screaming at my ass that I was going to die a fat lonely man who nobody loves. Instead she would just say, “I know you can do better!” Bah! At least EA Sports Active comes with a leg strap for the Wii nunchuka so that the movement tracking is at least sorta accurate. Plus, it’s just more fun. The Julian game was just a workout video with janky graphics. Ahem. I’ll put a review of both workout games together in future blog posts.
So yeah, overall, I’m pleased with this week. I lost 3 pounds which was 1 pound more I thought I would. That even included a cheat day where I didn’t hit my 1000 cal daily deficit. I am pleased with my results

Well, this week was a bust. I can’t even blame it on Thanksgiving feasting (which wasn’t the usual gorgefest this year anyways). I just wasn’t motivated at all. In fact, I didn’t care at all this week. Maybe next week will be different.
Here are my Bodybugg stats for the week although they’re pretty worthless. They’re quite misleading because I didn’t track my food on Thursday.

Friday Weigh In – 329
Weigh In: 329 lbs
Gain/Loss for the Week: Lost 1 pound
Total Loss: 71 lbs
This was a rough week on the weight loss front. I was pretty miserable over the weekend and it spilled into the week. I didn’t feel like working out and ended up skipping meals just to try and hit my deficit numbers. Needless to say, I failed to keep up the daily 2000 calorie deficit. I feel I’ve set the bar too high and it has affected my disposition. As awesome as it would be to be 300 lbs on my birthday, I’m afraid I’m not up for that level of commitment. I’d rather set the bar a little lower and clear it everyday with a smile on my face then fall short and let my emotions get the better of me.
Thus, I have decided to go back to my 2 pounds a week goal. I’m confident that I can hit a daily 1000 calorie deficit without much trouble. Anytime I can go over that is just fat free gravy
Sorry, no Bodybugg stats for you this week. When I reset my program in kind of jacked up the comparison charts. Next week I’ll have enough data to share.

Friday Weigh In – 330
Weigh In: 330 lbs
Gain/Loss for the Week: Lost 8 pounds
Total Loss: 70 lbs
Feels good to hit another milestone! I’m happy to report that I am right on track with hitting my goal of 300 pounds on my birthday, Jan. 6th. The only reason I pulled a big number this week is because last week I only showed 1 pound lost by Friday but on the Saturday I dropped the other 3. I blame my high sodium diet.
This week I managed to keep my sodium levels lower although my fat content was still way up. I actually had a surplus day (bad Ted!) but was able to high higher numbers on other days to compensate. This week I’ll try to work on lowering my fat content and see if I can hit the target on my nutritional goals.

Friday Weigh In – 338
Weigh In: 338 lbs
Gain/Loss for the Week: Lost 1 pound
Total Loss: 62 lbs
I’m slightly disappointed that I didn’t show the 4 pounds that I should have lost after seven days of maintaining a daily deficit of 2000 calories. I’m pretty sure my sodium intake had a lot to do with my weight fluctuations. Water retention occurs even in guys and since I’m such a big guy I guessing I have more cells to retain water. At least that’s my theory. My increased sodium intake is mostly due to dining out as well as some prepackaged foods. Judging by my sodium and fat intake I guess it’s no surprise that the contents of what I’m eating is secondary to counting calories. I’ll start to work on getting more low fat and lower sodium items on my plate and see if that makes a difference.

Week two with the Bodybugg went pretty good. I only went to the gym on one day, proving that you don’t need a gym to loose weight. I didn’t like how I had to play catch up for most of the week but I believe I did prove that you can make up later on in the week if you failed to reach a previous daily goal.
It was interesting how I maintained the same weight for five days straight until I suddenly lost 3 pounds overnight. I’m glad that I did not have the usual rollercoaster hump but it wasn’t exactly the kind of graph I expected. This week I am going to strive to meet my daily 1000 calorie deficit goal to see if the loss is as gradual as I thought it would be.

So I FINALLY got the Bodybugg display to work and boy is it spiffy! It’s fun to see up to the minute readings of my calories burned. I really enjoyed comparing the Bodybugg to the elliptical when it came to calories burned. I entered my parameters into the elliptical, aet the resistance to 8 and then proceeded with my usual 30 minute workout. The ellipitical immediately sat at an average of 17 calories / minute which was much higher than what my Bodybugg started off at. As I continued to workout and watched the Bodybug rate increase I began to realize that the elliptical’s 17 calories / minute was mainly an average for the whole 30 minute workout.
As you can see by the screenshot, the elliptical machine was not that off from the Bodybugg although I did notice one important detail. After I finished my workout I noticed that my calories burned per minute did not suddenly drop off to my average sedentary 2 cal/min. It stayed up there in 15 cal/min for several minutes later… at least until I got home. if not longer. I took it off t0 take a shower so there is no telling how many more calories I burned. I’ve read some articles about “after burn” and how you continue to burn extra calories after a workout so maybe it would behove me to hang on a few minutes before taking it off.
Tomorrow I’m gonna take one for the team and sit around for 30 minutes after I get home from working out. I’m curious to see just how many more calories I burn and see how long it takes me to get back to my average 2 calories / minute sedentary burn rate.
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. The Bodybugg definately makes you acutely aware of the little things that contribute to calories burned throughout the day. It’s so easy to think that you’re only doing good if you’re exercising in the gym. So not true! Park as far from the store as you can! When you pick up the mail take the longest route you can think of! Take the stairs when you can! There are so many ways that we can burn lil’ microworkouts that you’d be surprised how much it adds up.
