Grave Peril by Jim Butcher

Grave Peril (The Dresden Files, Book 3) Grave Peril by Jim Butcher
rating: 4 of 5 stars

Grave Peril was another fine Harry Dresden story that tied into events that occurred in the first Dresden book, Storm Front. The cast of characters expanded the supernatural world of Dresden with the addition of Michael, a Knight Templar who wields True Faith like it’s a sort of magic along with a holy sword that I suspect has way more significance than was revealed in this novel. They also introduced Thomas, a new sort of vampire that feeds on emotions instead of blood. Oh, and of course there’s Lea, Dresden’s fairy godmother.

I loved how Butcher expanded Harry’s world by exploring more supernatural elements such as ghosts, the fae, vampires and of course the Nevernever. I quite enjoyed the political intrigue with the vampires not to mention the interesting scenes that occurred in the Nevernever. I would dig reading an entire Nevernever novel set in that spiritual/dreamscape world where ghosts and the fae seem to rule.

I was slightly disappointed in how the mystery itself unfolded. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t feel like it fell into place for the reader as well as it seemed to for Harry. I’m sure writing mysteries can be a challenge with suitable red herrings and tangible clues that give the reader a chance to pick up yet are not so blatant that they give away the reveal too soon. All in all I enjoyed the novel and would recommend it to anyone who is into the Urban Fantasy genre or who have played any of the White Wolf RPGs.

Dresden Files – Welcome to the Jungle #1

I was first introduced to The Dresden Files when the short lived tv series originally aired on the Sci-Fi channel and my interest in the series led me to check out the novels that inspired the tv adaptation. I’ve read the first novel Blood Rites and I’m currently reading the second, Fool Moon. When I found out that a Dresden Files comic book was coming out I made sure I snagged me a copy.

The comic is an okay start into the world of the Dresden Files. The script and story are both written by Dresden Files creator Jim Butcher and as to be expected they’re true to form from the novels. The story is interesting although not what I would call riveting so far but I’ll give it some time to develop. What disappointed me the most was the artists representation of Dresden casting some of his spells. I wasn’t looking for fire and brimstone but was hoping to see something when he cast a wind spell to block an attacker. Don’t get me wrong. The level of detail in the artwork is well done it just needs work on depicting action.

That bit of “needs improvement” aside I feel the comic series is worthy of picking up a 2nd issue, especially after I found some tantalizing images over on this thread. It looks like many of the iconic Dresden Files characters will be making appearances so things should be looking up. We’ll see next issue.
